Between 1988 and 1994, backed by Silvio Berlusconi, AC Milan built one of club football’s greatest dynasties, shaped first by Arrigo Sacchi and later refined by Fabio Capello.

Sacchi introduced a revolutionary philosophy based on high pressing, zonal defending, and collective movement. At its heart was a legendary spine. Captain Franco Baresi marshalled a defence featuring generational talents Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta.
In midfield, Frank Rijkaard provided balance and bite alongside Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Donadoni. Up front, Ballon d’Or winners Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten formed a devastating partnership: Gullit roaming as a powerful No.10, Van Basten delivering world-class finishing as one of the game’s greatest No.9s.
After Sacchi’s back-to-back European Cups in 1989 and 1990, Capello took over in 1991, preserving the structure while adding pragmatism, defensive steel, and ruthless game management. The result was an unbeaten 1991–92 Serie A season, three consecutive league titles (1992–94), and another Champions League crown in 1994.
With Demetrio Albertini and Marcel Desailly established, and Van Basten sidelined by injury, Daniele Massaro, Dejan Savićević, and Jean-Pierre Papin powered a new-look attack.
The era peaked in Athens in 1994, when Milan dismantled FC Barcelona 4–0, sealing a golden age built on tactical innovation, iconic players, and sustained dominance.
